NATIONAL “TAKE A KID MOUNTAIN BIKING DAY”
Kernville, California—Mountain & River Adventures (MRA) is hosting this area’s first ever “Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day” this Saturday, October 1, 2005, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at our main check-in center located at 11113 Kernville Road.
In an effort to get kids more active and help fight childhood obesity last year, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution on October 5, 2004 officially declaring national “Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day”. This annual event is held on the first Saturday of each October.
“Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day” a national event, is promoted by the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) to celebrate the life of Jack Doub, an avid teenage mountain biker from North Carolina who had a true passion for the sport from an early age but passed away in 2002. President of MRA and IMBA member, John Stallone says “it’s important to introduce valley kids to outdoor activities available in our community so that they not only have the opportunities, but also learn to use our public lands in a very positive way”.
Kern River Valley residents are encouraged to find a kid -- neighbors, friends, co-workers, relatives, and take them for a ride! Get them a bike and a helmet and call MRA to register for this free, introduction to mountain biking for kids. Our “Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day” designated trail is located in the forest, on Greenhorn Mountain and is suitable for most all ages and abilities.
Those interested should call MRA to register; to let us know if you need a shuttle ride or will meet us at the trail head; and also to reserve a bike. Items participants should bring along include layered clothing, especially a windbreaker, water, snacks, an extra bike tube, pump, tire levers and a multi-tool. MRA staff will be on hand to help out with any roadside mechanical needs, yet it’s always good to be prepared.
For more information, or to register for this free mountain biking event for kids, please call Mountain & River Adventures at (800) 861-6553, or visit us on the web at www.mtnriver.com.
